Movie Review On LIONHEART: “It Was Genevieve’s Directorial Debut And She Totally Nailed It” – Anoke Adaeze

It’s better stale than not at all, aye?
I’ve been up to my neck with a million and one things to do since the inception of this delightfully new year, but I know this girl wouldn’t quite forgive herself if she totally failed to give her two cents on Netflix’s latest original, LionHeart.
First off, the LionHeart cast couldn’t have been better selected.
Something about seeing Nkem OwohGenevieve NnajiPhynoKOKOnyeka OnwenuKalu Ikeagwu and the man after my own heart, Pete Edochie thrown together in a classic mix which steadily gravitated to a rich creamy blend- warmed me all the way to my toes.
I low-key expected that, like the typical Nollywood movie plots where conspiracy theories are woven from even the most innocuous of situations, Godswill Obiaguwould seek to oust his brother and niece from the family business.
My Nollywood movie prediction skill was put to shame and it felt good to be wrong this once.
There were hilarious scenes, like when Madame External Auditor said she went for teeth-whitening and then proceeded to display dentition that reminded me of blighted maize.
I was absolutely chuffed with the infusion of culture in such a way that was somehow, neither intrusive nor painfully cliché to watch.
The way Adaeze’s mum interrupted serious conversation to chip in a characteristically maternal ‘don’t slouch’ mild reprimand, is very typical of Nigerian mothers. Mine, very inclusive.
Be it a Nollywood classic or a Nollywood Awkuzu film, Nkem Owoh never fails to bring his own vintage flavour to the table.
I found myself instinctively smiling whenever he appeared on the screen.
Yeah, I dubbed the category of Nollywood movies that try in vain to mess with my IQ, Nollywood Awkuzu and the twenty-first century sort, Nollywood Classic.
No offence meant to the Awkuzu people.
The movie was pleasantly indigenous and even though it was subtitled, I don’t think non-Igbos got the real essence from the Godswill Obiagu character as the subtitling did not almost do justice to the character.
I could barely take my eyes off the screen when Adaeze was on it. It’s no news to anyone who knows me that Genevieve Nnaji can do no wrong in my sight.
LionHeart managed to meld Nollywood Awkuzu and Nollywood Classic in an even delightful blend. Didn’t think the day would come when I would think that. Yeah.
The story of LionHeart is an impressive tale of leadership, mentorship and succession.
It is the ultimate wish of a responsible father to groom his children to succeed him when he is old, frail or gone.
The comic moments were very natural.
It was Genevieve’s directorial debut and she totally nailed it. I’m glad she hit pay dirt with this one. It was totally deserved.
I hope her next movie leaves this one in the dust.
LionHeart in three words. Quaint. Refreshing. Hilarious.
Now guys,

‘My Song ‘Maradona’ Changed My Life’ – Niniola

Nigerian singer, Niniola Apata, says her hit song, ‘Maradona’, represents a radical turning point in her music career.
The 32-year-old singer, who is in the Afro-house music genre, made the disclosure in an interview on Off -The-Top reality show where the she narrated her emergence in the music industry.
“Preparation meets opportunity,” Niniola said, when asked about her romance with the Afro-house genre. “To be honest. It just happened”, she added.
“It’s the grace of God but as they say, when hard work and preparation meets opportunity, it just happens. After Project Fame, I just wanted to prove myself. I knew I could sing but I just wanted more. I loved to dance and wanted to incorporate these two things.
“I didn’t know anybody in the industry. So, I went online in search for the best producer in Nigeria. This was in 2013. Sarz’s name kept coming up.
I reached out to him and he requested that I give him a hit song. I dropped “Ibadi” and that’s how it happened.
“One song changed my life. I just did the song (Maradona) and knew that, like every other ones, it was good. But when we dropped it, it went boom. People and artistes from South Africa started reaching out to me.”

Why Ycee And The Remaining Artistes Left Tinny Entertainment

Tinny Entertainment was undoubtedly one of the leading Record Labels in Nigeria with a handful of talented acts signed under it.
The label is owned by Mr Timilehin Arokodare popularly known as Small Tinny, the label housed amazing entertainers such as YceeBellaDapo TuburnaDamilare and few others.
Last Week the front liner of the label Ycee made it publicly known, via a tweet, that he is no longer signed to the music label, in response to a fan who asked if he was still with the label.
In truth, Ycee had terminated his contract with the label since September 2018, as well as, Bella, Dapo Tuburna and Damilare, who all terminated their contracts with the label, leaving Tinny Entertainment with no artiste to manage.
For over eighteen months, I was the label’s PR (and held the record of the longest served member of staff) I handled the label’s social media platforms, distribution and promotion of content; and trust me, in my almost two-year stay at the label, I lost count of how many staff members came and went.
There was an instance where the label’s CEO returned from the UK and sacked ten of his staff members, leaving only the gate man and myself. One other time, a new staff member was employed on Monday and was sacked on Friday.
Let’s say, Boss Tinny, as I always referred to him was a ruthless boss with high demand for excellence and little or no regard for his staff.
It’s no surprise at all that all his artistes up and terminated their contracts with him at the same time.
The artistes’ angst with the label had started long ago and only intensified in January 2018 during the Ycee Juice Concert in London.
Ycee and Bella had had issues with the label’s CEO while they were all in London; and as punishment, the management had abandoned the talents in the UK, leaving them with no means to take care of themselves or even return home.
I will not go into the details of how the talents were able to survive their stay in the UK.
The issue was later resolved but not too long afterwards, trouble brewed again in the camp when the label could no longer handle the management of her four artistes concurrently.
Not a day went by without a complaint from one of the artistes demanding the status of their career and their brand direction.
I remember this time when Dapo Tuburna, in indignation, sent an angry mail to the label’s CEO demanding to know the way forward as regarding his music career, while pointing out that the label was not holding up their own end of the contract; stating he funds his own distribution and promotion most of the time, despite having signed to a label as prominent as Tinny Entertainment.
Damilare on the other hand, never stopped complaining about how the label did not have time for him and how the distribution and promotion of his releases were not properly funded by the label. He was signed in 2017 and had only two singles and a video to show for it.
Established artistes often have a key-man clause in their contracts, which allows them to leave for another label if both parties, the label and the artiste, come to a mutual agreement to part ways.
I think, that was the case with Ycee. For upcoming artistes, dropping out may be better than being stuck in a contract with a corporation that cares more about the bottom line than having the conviction to stick with artistes, even if they do not see immediate returns.

“I Prefer Uber Than Buying A Car” – Mr Eazi

This might come as a shock to many lovers of Mr Eazi and his work as in a recent interview with Saturday Beats, the Leg Over singer revealed that he did not own a car.
In his explanation, he stated that he preferred using Uber. He further said,
“If your self-esteem is based on how much you have in your bank account, then you have a serious self-esteem issue. Right from when I sang my very first song, someone offered me N80m record deal but I turned it down and at the time, I did not have N300,000 in my account.
“My first record deal offer from the UK was £356,000, I turned it down but at the time, I had done a tour and the total amount I earned was £12,500. I used the money to shoot the videos of some of my songs. I was left with £20; they were offering me £365,000, but I turned it down. The reason I did that was because my value was not dependent on what was in my account.
“Till today, I use Uber but I do not care and by the way, I don’t even pay for the ride because I was given Uber credit. But if you see me in the Uber vehicle and feel that Mr. Eazi is poor, what is my business (with that)? For instance, everybody around me has cars, and besides, I buy cars for people.
If it makes sense for me to use an Uber, why should I drive? Why would I pay about N100m for a car that I would probably drive just five times a year?
“There are better things to do with that money. In the short time, I have spent on earth, I have made a lot of money. While I was into mining, I had so much money that I was living at a place that was a stone’s throw away from the airport in Accra and I was paying my rent in dollars.
“I was making a lot of money. That shows you how expensive it was but I went from there to squatting with my friend in a one-room apartment. I was sleeping on the floor in his room.
Also, when I was doing the business of selling beverages, we started with a crate and in a short while, we began to import four containers every two weeks. From importing four containers every two weeks, we went back to nothing. In my life,
I have had ups and down. If my self-worth was based on material things, I would have killed myself.”
The singer admitted that he had received a lot of backlash on social media simply because of his relationship with Temi, one of the daughters of a billionaire oil magnate, Femi Otedola.
However, Mr Eazi said such things would never faze him.
“People can say what they want to say and if you want to let everything they say about you bother you, then you are not going to live, especially when you are in the public eye.
“You have to realise that as an entertainer, your life becomes a form of entertainment to others. I really do not care about what anybody thinks. He that is in me is greater than he that is in the world, so why care about what the world is saying?” The singer said.

Stealing And Using Pants For Ritual Purposes Is Crazy – Harrysong

Songwriter and singer Harrysong has waded into the issue of stealing and using pants for ritual purposes, which he described as crazy.
While advising ritualists and yahoo boys who are desperate to make quick money to find an alternative, legal means of making money, he condemned the criminal act.
He Wrote:
“Something has been seriously bothering me and I want to say it and clear my mind before releasing my song. ‘Journey’ is coming out tomorrow and I just need the air to be clear and fresh. It’s about hustle, it’s about realness and a lot is going on, this one is hustling this one, that one is hustling that one. Now its pant, stealing pants is trending everywhere.
It’s crazy! Come on, hustle right. I’ve done a lot of hustle; I’ve been a fisherman, choirmaster, different hustles I have engaged in because I wanted a better life. In all, just do things right; get a job, get a life instead of this our pressing here, pressing there, stealing people’s pants.”
